The Life-Altering Decision Quarterback Vince Young Made as a College Junior Former National Football League quarterback Vince Young grew up in a low-income community without a father figure in his life. It was in football that he found his true passion. After high school, his star rose quickly as a college quarterback for the University of Texas. He won 30 games, lost two and led the team to a national championship at the 2006 Rose Bowl. It was at UT that he also found the father figure he had been longing for in head coach Mack Brown.
As a standout player, Vince was faced with a difficult decision on whether to leave school early to join the NFL. Mack says Vince sought his advice. "He said, 'If I was your son, what would you do? What would you tell me to do, coach?'" Mack recalls. " if I'm you, I would look very closely at what's going to happen if I leave. And that means I'm going to be really rich and make a whole lot of money, and I'm going to be pushed into pro football immediately. But that's your choice."
In the video above, Mack reveals what Vince was thinking and the hard realities that led to his decision to leave for the NFL.
Tune in to In Deep Shift with Jonas Elrod Sunday, March 1, at noon ET/PT. Oprah Winfrey Network this Sunday at 11am CST.

OK. It looks like this was not as it seems: - looks like there were a ton of applicants and the league picked and choose who they accepted based on input from NFL teams - most of the players who were there did not have much of a shot - the application did not have a deadline on the form, but that was probably irrelevant in the bigger picture
I will say that there appear to be few players who the media want to look worse than VY. There is almost never anything positive about him and even positive developments turn out to be given a negative twist.
Tiring. Very pessimistic about a potential return to the league, when you see others whose character are questioned struggling to catch on with teams, even if they perform well on the field.
