After Vince Young was signed by the Buffalo Bills on Friday, everyone seems to be buzzing about his potential position (via ESPN).
Some people think he wasn't worth signing. Others believe he's a solid second string quarterback. Even a few, most notably Skip Bayless of ESPN, believe that Vince Young will eventually start for the Bills this season.
Looking at the remaining free-agent quarterbacks, I believe Vince Young was the best option in free agency. I believe he has more potential than any of the other quarterbacks that were drafted in the late rounds of this year's NFL draft.
After training camp and preseason, I see Young beating out Tyler Thigpen for the second string quarterback position. Most Bills fans should feel the same way.
In my opinion, Vince Young would be one of the best second-string quarterbacks in the league. Bills fans should realize how lucky they are to sign a player like Vince Young.
One reason is, throughout his football career, he has always been a winner. Starting in high school, Young carried his team through many regional games all the way through to the State Championship.
Although they did lose in the championship game, Young had a terrific performance, totaling over 490 total yards and five TDs.
In college, Young carried his 2006 Texas Longhorns team to a Rose Bowl win behind his 467 yards and three TD performance. The clutch drive at the end of the game shows his ability to come through under pressure with the game on the line.
Finally, in the NFL, Young led a team that was 4-12 in 2005 to the playoffs in 2007. Young finished the season passing for over 2,500 yards in 15 games with a completion percentage of 62.3. While Young's game isn't always pretty, he always seems to get the job done.
As a backup quarterback, he can push Fitzpatrick to reach his fullest potential by being a viable backup. He's a quarterback who has experienced high pressured games, and he can advise Fitzpatrick on how to handle those type of games.
Having an above average backup quarterback can help out during the season.Any injury to a team's starting quarterback can be devastating, but a solid second option can be the difference from making the playoffs and missing it by a game or two. Just ask the Cowboys the past few years.
Another reason Young is a great option at backup is because of his mobility and use of the spread offense. In Texas, Young mainly operated out of the shotgun with a spread offense.
The Bills operated mainly out of the spread option last year because it was a strength of Gailey's and Fitzpatrick's. While Young would have to adjust to the playbook, the playing style itself should remind him of his days at Texas.
