Just because the Packers cut Graham Harrell on Saturday doesn’t mean Vince Young has locked up the No. 2 quarterback job behind Aaron Rodgers.
At least that’s the approach Young and coach Mike McCarthy are taking.
“I really feel like the job is still up in the air right now,” said Young after practice today. “I feel like me and B.J. (Coleman) are still competing. Overall, it’s not about us, really it’s about the team and pushing each other so we can bring the talent out of both of us as well as Aaron. Just pushing each other. That’s what it’s all about.”
McCarthy said the backup QB battle rages on.
“The No. 2 spot hasn’t been answered,” said McCarthy. “That’s where we are. B.J. and Vince are going to compete and take the majority of this football game (against Kansas City).”
Young said that despite Harrell’s departure, nothing has changed for him.
“I’m still working, still trying to get better, still catching up,” Young said. “It’s a lot to learn right now. I just really feel like just a lot of extra work behind the scenes is going to help me get to where I need be at.”

McCarthy has been easing Young into the offense, especially during games.
“What I love about here, you just tell Coach what you feel comfortable with and you don’t feel like it’s something you’re comfortable with, he’ll scratch it off,” said Young. “He does a great job of doing that. The biggest thing is preparation and getting yourself prepared to play each week.”
Young has been keeping himself busy studying the Packers offense.
“It’s about film work and more reps and getting more plays and getting more comfortable with the offense,” he said.
“When I was in the lockout year in Philly, I had to do the same thing. I had to go in and grind it out, grind it out. It’s the same thing here. Get here, stay overtime and just grind it out. It’s football, it’s what I love to do. It’s my craft. I want to put in the work so I can continue to catch up with the guys and get better each week.”
