Tom Oates: With little prep, Vince Young does well enough
As non-descript as Vince Young's Green Bay Packers debut was, think about this: In Friday night's preseason game, he played better than he practiced all week.
Young completed one of his three passes for 7 yards in the Packers' 17-0 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He was sacked once and ran twice for 12 yards. It wasn't much of an opening act for Young, the third overall pick in the 2006 draft who was signed off the street by the Packers Monday, but to Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy, it was enough.
"My goal with Vince was to get him about 10 to 12 snaps," McCarthy said. "He's only been here a couple of days. I just wanted to get him where he can go play quarterback. If you've been down at practice, particularly (Thursday's) practice, I didn't think I did a very good job of giving him things that he's comfortable with. We were able to spend some time this morning and iron out a package for him. I thought he did some nice things.
"It was good to just get him out there. I wanted to get him out there. He hasn't played football in a year. Obviously, playing the quarterback position is a little different than playing other positions. I was happy to get him into the game, get him into the flow of the game and definitely get him started. We'll try to do more with him next week."
One thing Young did show was that he could still run. That excited McCarthy, but Young's background excited him more.
"I'll be honest with you," the coach said, "the thing about Vince Young just from my personal opinion in the evaluation process was, the man's winner. The man's won games. He's won championships. In high school, college, just the way he's gone about it. Having an opportunity to sit down and listen to his story in that type of setting as far as hearing what he had to say, he fits good into our room. But obviously he’s at a disadvantage because he hasn’t been here. He’s got a lot to learn, and (quarterbacks coach) Ben McAdoo’s doing a great job with him. Those two are spending a lot of extra time. We’ll do a much better job of getting him ready to play (next week) against St. Louis."
McCarthy was then asked if he could possibly see enough of Young in three weeks to keep him on the final roster.
"I don’t know," he said. "I don’t know if I've been through one like this, where you bring in a guy this late. I’ve been part of situations where you sign a veteran quarterback at the last cut, but Ive never brought one in three days before the first preseason game."
