Green Bay --- Vince Young's career with the Green Bay Packers began Tuesday. Sporting his No. 13 jersey, the former third overall pick took only two snaps for two handoffs in 11-on-11 action.
Speaking about the signing for the first time, coach Mike McCarthy said after practice that the team felt it "needed to add more competition" at quarterback.
So now, the former Tennessee Titans starter is here, competing with Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman for a roster spot behind Aaron Rodgers.
"It’s an on-going process with our personnel department," McCarthy said. "Vince came in, and I thought he did a nice job in the workout. He hasn’t been in a camp or been with a team in quite some time, since Buffalo last year, so we’re excited to give him an opportunity.
"Vince Young is a very talented player. You look at his history, it speaks volumes about his ability to play. It’s just a matter of getting comfortable with him. We have a diverse offensive scheme. I think it’s very important that your system has ability to absorb any player. I think it’s a big mistake when coaches talk about that their system of football and you have to bring in people to fit your system. ...We have concepts and categories in our offensive system and schemes that I think will definitely benefit Vince’s ability. It’s just really, we’re back to square one, he’s learning a new language."
Time is of the essence for the quarterback. Asked if Young would play Friday, McCarthy said he was hopeful everyone would play.
Either way, bringing in Young after the Packers' intrasquad scrimmage does send a message to both Harrell and Coleman. Heading into the preseason, there's more pressure on both players.
"We're adding more competition to the room, I think what I said after the (scrimmage) is accurate," McCarthy said. "I thought Graham played, I thought it was one of the better scrimmage-type environments that Graham has performed in. B.J. did not take the step that I was hoping for, but he’s a young player . This is really his first opportunity…and I’m not giving up on B.J. Coleman because I think he has a, definitely a future, a bright future. So if you look across our football team, that is a room that there will be more competition. And Vince Young was available."
