I know things slow down in June and I also realize teams never stop looking for quarterbacks, but JaMarcus Russell, arguably the biggest draft bust ever, is back on the NFL radar screen.
Please, he fooled people the first time NFL coaches and personnel types watched him throw in shorts. The guy has a great arm, but is he a passer or thrower? Does he have what it takes from the neck up to play the NFL game? Is there enough practice time anymore to develop him?
Russell hasn't thrown an NFL pass in pads since January 3, 2010. He's thrown one touchdown pass since October 18, 2009. He needed all the reps he could get to grow into a potential backup but instead he has been at home reducing his weight from more than 300 pounds to 260. If any team is serious about putting another QB on their roster and JaMarcus Russell is in the conversation, then I believe Vince Young should be in the same conversation.
Vince Young has achieved some level of success in this league and I was told by a very reputable source that he looked very good at his own Texas pro day this spring.
Compare the two players and certainly bring Vince Young in for the same workout with JaMarcus Russell. That way the two QBs could be evaluated face-to-face.
I think Vince Young would win that battle.
Look at these numbers before the guys even get to town. Vince Young is only two years older than JaMarcus Russell, even though Russell is advertised as a 'young' man. At least Young threw 29 passes as recently as December 1, 2011 -- a full year closer to now than Russell.
Young vs. Russell: A comparison
Vince Young JaMarcus Russell
60 games/50 starts Games played/Starts 31 games/25 starts
46 touchdown passes Touchdown passes 18 touchdown passes
1:29 throws Ratio of TD: Attempts 1:38 throws
51 Interceptions 23
1:26 throws Ratio of INT: Attempts 1:29 throws
1:16.7 Ratio of sacks: Attempts 1:10.7
31 Wins/20 loses Record as starter 7 wins/18 loses
282-1459 yds-12TD-5.2 per Rushing 40-175 yds-1 TD-4.4per
40-12 Fumbles/Fumbles lost 25/15
I polled a lot of listeners on my radio show as well as taking many emails on this subject. It wasn't even close -- with Vince Young in a landslide. In fact, Tim Tebow got more positive reaction and he really wasn't even in the question.
With a number of teams incorporating the pistol and the option it's clear Vince has better tools for that offense and his production as a passer is just better. Young is 29 years old, he's not some over-30 guy. Young also never had a weight problem and he never will. He was back at Texas getting his degree this year. If Russell is worth a look, Vince Young sure is as well.
