The Falcons have lost quarterback Sean Renfree for the season as he suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder in the preseason finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars. That leaves the potential for the Falcons to bring in a veteran quarterback given some of the struggles that Dominique Davis has had this summer.
Several players were released or waived by their respective teams over the weekend, and I want to look at those that I feel could help the Falcons.
First we should delineate between a player being released and waived. Players with less than four years of experience are waived. Meaning that they have to pass through a waiver period of 24 hours. During that time teams are allowed to put a waiver claim on them. If multiple teams put claims on that player, the priority is determined by the team with the worst record. If a player is claimed, then his previous salary is absorbed by the new team. If a player goes unclaimed, then he is free to sign with any team he wants. A player is released if he has four or more years of experience, and will not be subject to waivers. He’s essentially an unrestricted free agent, no different than if this was March. He’s free to sign and negotiate a brand new deal with any team in the league immediately. Young is the final name I want to point out. Yes, Vince Young is erratic and inconsistent. He makes bone-headed plays all the time. But here’s the case for Young: he is a very good vertical passer, which is something that is regularly forgotten about him. His mobility and athleticism means he can escape from the pocket behind a weaker offensive line. He never really had the opportunity to work with great receivers while in Tennessee. Over the course of his five-year career there, the top five pass catchers were (in order or receptions): Justin Gage, Brandon Jones, Nate Washington, Kenny Britt, and Roydell Williams. I’m at least curious to see what Young could do if he was throwing to White, Gonzalez, and Jones. Particularly Jones, since Young’s ability to throw the deep ball, matched with the explosive Jones could potentially be a recipe for success. In truth, the player I believe the Falcons are optimistic that Davis grows into is Young without all of that other baggage he accumulated in Tennessee[/font].

I'm really depressed about VY situation in the league.i do not think he will have another shot. All the people who loved him before ( Bud Adams, Andy Reid, Buddy Nix, the former Bills QB coach who is with the Jets now and Ted Thompson) gave up on him. At least he was able to do some good thing in this year preseason, but i'm not sure if that was enough to earn him another opportunity in the eyes of the rest of the league obviously.
thnk the only chance would be if he was able to have a nice conversation with Jeff Fisher, and Fisher gave him an opportunity to be the Rams backup. Clemens is awful. VY won a lt of games for Fisher. That would be the only way to clean VY image in the NFL. But i think i'm asking for too much to happens.

Packers G.M. Ted Thompson on the final cuts (On releasing Vince Young) We felt like that's where we were. Frankly, it wasn't fair to Vince. We threw a lot at Vince. A lot on his plate. He was a good teammate. The fault is probably mine. Should have brought him in sooner. The fault is mine.

I don't agree with your assessment that jeff fisher was his only option. I think Jeff Fisher is his last option and worst. And I don't think that everyone who loved him 'gave up on him'. He was facing an uphill battle in GB because of the ridiculously short time that he had to learn everything. And I do think it helps him that Ted Thompson is at least being honest about whether this was Vince failing or them not having given him a realistic chance: www.packersnews.com/article/20130901/PKR0101/130901013?nclick_check=1-Quarterback situation is what it is right now. This time of the year, it’s not just our team, there’s a lot of turnover going around today. There’s going to be some more as players become available. Teams still out there shopping and trying to improve your team. -We felt like that’s where we were in releasing Vince Young. Probably wasn’t fair to Vince. The fault is probably mine. I probably should’ve had him in here earlier. He was a great teammate. He seemed like a good guy. We enjoyed his time here For the rest, very frustrated and empty about this. Hopefully he will get another shot, but it is going to be tough, tough, tough to ever get back to a starter position....

I respect your opinion Joan, a lot, but c'mon. BJ Coleman was awful during this preseason. Any QB Green bay sign now will have more trouble/ less time than VY. Ted Thompson words will not convince anyone. Just like when Fisher said good things about VY, or when Andy Reid said to him he would not be able to come back to the eagles because he was a starter and not a backup. That's all bullshit, and people always will say VY has too much bagage and will prefer to sign shit qbs like Leinart or QUinn than him. Unfortunately it's the true. VY had some shots, and not good ones, very hard ones given the circunstacies, but could not take advantage of then. I'm not so sure he will ever have another shot.

Oakland Raiders cut QB Tyler Wilson, their fourth-round pick in this year’s draft The Raiders can't afford to blow draft picks. They're in the middle of the deepest rebuilding projects in the league, and with so much dead cap space, they needed to hit on draft picks. Instead, they've already cut a fourth-round pick before he even plays a regular-season game. Quarterback Tyler Wilson's drop is shocking. Before he came back for his final season at Arkansas he was considered a possible top 10 NFL draft pick. He struggled as a senior, fell to the fourth round and now he's out of a job after the lowly Raiders cut him. Pro Football Talk was the first to report that news. The idea to take a shot on a quarterback in the fourth round was smart for the Raiders. But Wilson was so bad he's looking for a job already. Despite being praised during minicamps (kids, let's remember this next year when observers are going crazy over rookies in meaningless practices), Wilson plummeted quickly in training camp. He was well behind undrafted Matt McGloin in the preseason. The Raiders' decision to cut him now means they do not think he can be salvaged. This is a team that entered Sunday with two punters on the roster (they did cut Chris Kluwe Sunday afternoon to get down to one). And no clear quarterback of the future either. The Raiders, who aren't going to make the playoffs this year anyway, could afford to use a roster spot on a fourth-round pick at quarterback if they thought there was any chance Wilson could develop into a competent player. By cutting Wilson now, they're announcing they think he has absolutely no future as a NFL quarterback. Or they'd have no problem keeping him around to develop. It's a really bad mistake by general manager Reggie McKenzie. Wilson was the highest pick in the 2013 draft cut over the weekend. Seahawks receiver Chris Harper was the only other fourth-round pick cut. Perhaps the Raiders didn't use him right and some other team can turn him around. He has to have some skills to justify that 2012 draft hype, which came before he made the regrettable decision to come back for another year (how could he have known Bobby Petrino would sink Arkansas' season with his idiocy?). But if you can't make the Raiders, the only team that was still auditioning players in Week 4 to determine a starting quarterback, that's a terrible sign for Wilson's NFL future. sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/oakland-raiders-cut-qb-tyler-wilson-fourth-round-184531227--nfl.html

Young had an uninspiring performance in the preseason finale against Kansas City, completing only 14 of 30 passes for 144 yards with no touchdowns, no interceptions and two fumbles (one lost) for a 61.0 passer rating. "In my short time being here, I learned as much as I could. Hopefully teams across the NFL saw that, being in the situation I was, how much hard work I put in behind the scenes to try to catch up, try to do the best I could," Young said after the game Thursday night. "Like I said when I first got in (to Green Bay), I just never gave up on myself. I just wanted another opportunity and Green Bay gave me another opportunity. And then they did, I made the best of it. "Hopefully I get an opportunity to stay on the team, stay here and help out. And if not, hopefully teams around the league will give me an opportunity as well." Mike Vandermause column: Packers QB Coleman not ready for primetime yet B.J. Coleman might very well blossom into a productive NFL quarterback some day, but he’s not ready to get thrown into an NFL game that counts yet. Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson disagrees, and if he stands pat, Coleman will be taking snaps if anything happens to starter Aaron Rodgers. When asked if he was confident Coleman, with no regular-season experience, could fill in for Rodgers and be expected to win a game, Thompson replied at his Sunday press conference: “Well, we think he has a good chance to do that. Again, there’s a lot of things that he hasn’t seen yet. He’s played in preseason games but never played in a regular-season game. We’re getting ready to tee it off, so we’re getting ready to play.” This is not a knock on Coleman’s skills. He has a big enough arm, plenty of heart and is getting better after Thompson selected him in the seventh round of the 2012 draft. But he desperately needs more seasoning, as evidenced by his lowly preseason completion percentage (41.2) and passer rating (49.6). Coleman ranked 110th in accuracy and 106th in passer rating among 115 NFL quarterbacks that threw a pass during the preseason. Part of Thompson’s job is to put players in positions where they can succeed, and he would fall woefully short of doing that if Coleman is thrown into battle before he is ready. Thompson took the blame on Sunday for not signing Vince Young sooner and for not giving him a good enough chance to earn the backup quarterback job. Young was the favorite to serve as Rodgers’ backup this season before he was sent packing on Saturday. “It probably wasn’t fair to Vince,” said Thompson. “We threw a lot on his plate and the fault is probably mine. I probably should have had him in here earlier. He was a great teammate, he seemed like a very humble good guy.” Thompson finally got around to signing Young more than a week into training camp. It didn’t appear to be a well-thought-out plan, and Young’s head was spinning as he attempted to learn the Packers’ complicated offense. Thompson also gave up on last year’s backup, Graham Harrell, after the third preseason game. That leaves the Packers in a precarious position if Rodgers, who was the most sacked quarterback in the NFL last season, suffers an injury. Coleman’s preseason numbers were worse than Harrell’s or Young’s. The only other quarterback on the premises is former Badger Scott Tolzien, who was signed to the practice squad over the weekend but like Coleman has never played a regular-season down. Thompson has attempted this high-wire act before. In 2008 the Packers’ backup quarterback was Matt Flynn, who had no NFL experience. And in 2012, Harrell served as the No. 2 signal caller with no regular-season snaps on his resume. In those instances the Packers got away with it because Rodgers stayed healthy. But at what point is this risky backup quarterback game going to blow up in Thompson’s face? “Playing quarterback is an interesting thing,” said Thompson. “I think I’ve said this before in here, you don’t really know until you know. You’ve got to be put in the fire and see how everything works and the timing and the reactions and all the things that go into playing that position. It’s an extraordinarily difficult position to play well.” Which is why it would make sense to sign someone who has seen and felt that fire. Thompson has steadfastly clung to the hope that Rodgers will never get hurt. Sooner or later, he’s going to get burned using that approach. The Packers’ Week 1 opponent, the San Francisco 49ers, have a fallback option in Colt McCoy in case starter Colin Kaepernick goes down. McCoy isn’t anything special, but he could enter a game and give his team a fighting chance to win. Who besides Thompson is willing to say that about Coleman? It’s obvious that if Rodgers gets seriously hurt and misses an extended period of time, the Packers’ Super Bowl and playoff hopes will be shot. But why not put someone on the roster capable of spelling Rodgers on a short-term basis and winning a game here or there? At this late date, the best the Packers can hope for is to sign a veteran quarterback who slowly picks up the offense and could contribute during the stretch run if needed. There’s not a lot of good options out there, with Jimmy Clausen, Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, Trent Edwards, David Carr, John Skelton and Caleb Hanie available. But wouldn’t just about any veteran with some regular-season credentials be better than the raw, inexperienced Coleman? Thompson said he’s prepared to go into the regular season with Rodgers and Coleman as his quarterbacks. “That’s where we are right now,” he said. Of course, that could change at any time. “We’re actively pursuing everything there is in the National Football League, at every position,” said Thompson. He would be wise to scour every NFL nook and cranny and provide the Packers with a safety net at their most important position. www.packersnews.com/article/20130901/PKR07/309010349/Mike-Vandermause-column-QB-Coleman-not-ready-primetime-yet

in some ways I hold out hope that they were doing this for pure financial reasons and that they re-sign Vince after week 1, when any guaranteed money that they would owe him if they had not cut him would be gone. it would suck financially, but he could at least be part of a winning organization and learn how such a disciplined organization works, instead of the jeff fisher smalltown circus.
at this point, I think we are all better off assuming the worst and not getting our hopes up. let's hope that we are proven wrong ...

Packers cut B.J. Coleman, Aaron Rodgers currently has no backup The Packers released quarterback B.J. Coleman, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports. With the Packers having previously released Graham Harrell and Vince Young, they’re now down to only Rodgers on the 53-man roster. Quarterback Scott Tolzien is on the practice squad.
Green Bay obviously isn’t going to go into Week One against the 49ers with Rodgers as their only quarterback suited up, so they must be planning to sign some other quarterback who was let go by some other team in the last few days.
A 2012 seventh-round draft pick, Coleman did not play particularly well during the preseason, so it isn’t a huge surprise that he has been released. But it does remain an open question what would happen to the Packers’ offense if Rodgers were to suffer an injury. Whoever Rodgers’ backup is, he’s not on the Packers’ roster right now, and the season opener is six days away.

Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor taking first-team reps in practice Oakland Raiders quarterback Matt Flynn may find himself on the losing end of another position battle this season. Flynn signed a three-year, $26 million deal with the Seahawks in 2012, but failed to beat out rookie Russell Wilson for the starting job in Seattle. He was traded for a fifth-round pick in the 2014 draft and a conditional pick in 2015 to Oakland earlier this offseason. Flynn competed against Terrelle Pryor to become Oakland’s starting quarterback, and if today’s practice is any indication, he will be holding a clipboard - again. Pryor – not Flynn – took first-team reps during Raiders practice on Monday. Oakland has not announced its starting quarterback. But Pryor’s practice reps leading up to the season opener against Indianapolis could indicate he will start on Sunday. sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/raiders-quarterback-terrelle-pryor-taking-first-team-reps-190123151--nfl.html

If he doesn't get a chance now, maybe he gets to replace Ponder or Gabbert (or whatever the guy's name is in JAX) in the middle of the season when these teams give up on their starting QBs...

If he had joined the Raiders, he would have been starting. Now, he can only hope to do mop-up duty when someone gets injured of jettisoned in 2013. Which means his career in teh NFL is all but over. Realistically. Let's hope he gets some more shots, but they are going to be of poor quality. He is better of joining a team that needs fixing than a winning team that thinks they know it all. And that they don't need VY.

yes, i totally forgot about his workout. actually, they fell in love with matt flynn, I thought at that time. who is now not even starting. motherf**king mess.
i was very angry after him getting screwed over by chan gailey to protect his 2 butt boys (who were promptly shown the doow once chan gailey was gone), but now I don't know what to think. very messed up, I am not seeing a way out: 2013 is now officially shot for him and nobody will want to give a QB a real shot in 2014 if they have not played a bunch of games since 2010. which means things are more or less over for vince. other than being a backup QB. which nobody here is all too interested in. and is not what he deserves. all because he could not keep his head cool and understand that he had to navigate around fisher instead of burning that bridge. which burned almost all bridges into the NFL. whatever. I am going to chill out and have a few football free sundays and check in to see if he gets plugged in somewhere at some point...

Packers staff they Who did they get to replace Young and settle as Aaron Rodgers backup? Seneca Wallace and Scott Tolzien, freshly cut from the San Francisco 49ers. I’ve heard that Tolzien has a plethora of knowledge. I think that the Packers just picked these guys up to try and get a leg up on the 49ers before kickoff on Sunday. Sly move? Yes. Smart one? cut players who could find new homes soon Vince Young, QB: Take your pick of reclamation projects at quarterback. Young, Matt Leinart, JaMarcus Russell, Jimmy Clausen and Tim Tebow are all sitting out there at the moment. The 30-year-old Young could not stick in Green Bay, after being given the opportunity to serve as Aaron Rodgers’ backup — the Packers signed Seneca Wallace this week to take over that job. The reviews on Young out of Green Bay were not all that glowing either, so Young may not find a new home overnight. Still, of the QBs available, he’s the most talented. nfl.si.com/2013/09/03/nfl-free-agents-roster-cuts-jonathan-dwyer-kenny-phillips/
